Customer Perspective

The value of VigiLanz

Our customers appreciate the real-time information, expert support, valuable insights and return on investment they receive working with VigiLanz.

Infection Prevention

Becky Wolfe, RN IP:

“In February 2012, our system initiated VigiLanz. Our entire system had looked at many products and made the decision to utilize VigiLanz. Our expectations have been far exceeded. The training and immediate response on our questions, program build and ongoing QA to ensure we were capturing what we needed have been exceptional. Although no program is perfect, I have been surprised at how very good this program is and its ability to give us ongoing continual awareness and alerts to new cultures and issues. It has allowed us to eliminate piles of papers, eliminated duplicate and triplicate work and streamlined our workflow. This allows more time with our nursing staff to follow up and teach. I would highly recommend this program to any IP and organization.”

Jeremy Frens, PharmD, BCPS, Infectious Disease Pharmacist:

“The VigiLanz system helps identify suboptimal drug/bug combinations by immediately alerting me when the culture results are finalized. This allows me and the other pharmacists to evaluate the antibiotic therapy and recommend narrowing the antibiotic spectrum or changing antibiotics if a resistant organism is identified much sooner.”

Dan Hansen, PharmD, Clinical Pharmacy Specialist:

“VigiLanz solutions have allowed us to streamline the workflow for our clinical pharmacists so they spend much less time digging through charts and much more time working with patients. When we implemented our antimicrobial stewardship program using VigiLanz tools, we saw our interventions double immediately and have maintained that increase and impact during the year and a half we have been using VigiLanz solutions. We have eliminated a lot of the monitoring we were doing manually, which was time consuming and didn’t provide a lot of benefit for the cost. Now that VigiLanz does that monitoring for us behind the scenes, we are able to optimize our clinical pharmacy workflow to get the biggest impact from our time, delivering cost savings and helping us provide the best patient care possible.

The real-time reporting from VigiLanz alerts us to abnormal lab values and culture mismatches right away. Before VigiLanz, we wouldn’t find out about lab results until the next morning, but now we find out 24×7 and that real-time information is key to providing the best patient care. VigiLanz tools also have a significant effect on ADE prevention, such as anticoagulant intervention, by alerting us immediately so our pharmacists can stop or modify medications before adverse events occur. VigiLanz alerts help us avoid drug interactions and spend more time making interventions, such as adjustments for appropriate renal dosing.

We didn’t want to reinvent our clinical program around a software tool, instead, VigiLanz customized their software around our processes. The entire rules database in our solution is customized for our own practice, so we have a rule list that matches what we need to do and what’s important for our patients. It’s a very intuitive system that is easy to navigate. For such a complex tool – in terms of its ability to identify specific labs, drugs and patients – once you get an activation from VigiLanz, it’s very easy to track the interventions.

We are constantly adding new rules to our system to expand the things we are monitoring. I’m not a software guy, but the VigiLanz system is so easy to work with that I can easily build most new rules myself. When we need a rule that’s more complex, we submit a request and it is usually up and running within a day. The VigiLanz team is unbelievably fast with their response – we receive a confirmation right away and sometimes changes are made within an hour. They’re not just quick to respond, they’re also very creative in the way they build rules, such as helping us specifically monitor dialysis patients on certain antibiotics to track specific meds.

I can’t say enough good things about the VigiLanz team, how easy it is to work with them, and how much we appreciate the level of customization they provide to meet our needs.”

Jim Hasspacher, RPh MS, Manager of Medication Safety and Quality:

“VigiLanz solutions have helped us achieve a breakthrough leap in the number of interventions our clinical pharmacists are able to perform. With VigiLanz tools, we’re alerted to potentially dangerous or not ideal clinical situations related to drug therapy, helping prevent ADEs. The combination of being able to do ADE avoidance and infection prevention within the same system is key. Moving from an inefficient paper-based system, often relying on untimely data, to the VigiLanz continuous surveillance system has meant a huge leap in efficiency. Efficiency, timeliness and continuous surveillance – that’s what this product is all about, and it works.

VigiLanz tools also have proven effective in helping us achieve some improvements in core measures, such as DVT prophylaxis screening as part of our surgical care improvement project. VigiLanz allows our pharmacists to keep all patients under constant surveillance and identify those who need preventive therapy, such as anticoagulants or mechanical DVT prophylaxis, to avoid risks. VigiLanz alerts also have helped us improve conversion rates from IV therapy to less expensive oral medications. Automatic screening of patients enables us to more efficiently meet core measures necessary for reimbursement and cost containment as well as for patient care.

The ability to customize VigiLanz rules and create workflows to meet changing needs is critical. When our Pharmacy and Therapeutics committee meets to discuss new FDA medication safety alerts, for example, we can easily build decision support rules in the VigiLanz system to accommodate limits on the use of particular drugs for specific dosage ranges and ages as well as drug interaction restrictions. The efficiency, flexibility and customizability of the VigiLanz clinical decision support system are definite advantages.”

John Russillo, Clinical Pharmacy Manager:

“The value of VigiLanz software to us has been the capability of writing custom rules using any key drug and key lab to alert us to the need for clinical intervention on a real time ongoing basis. Before the implementation of VigiLanz software, we were limited to running various custom designed drug-lab reports to screen for possible problems. This was limited to a manual review by a pharmacist of each patient for a key drug and key lab combination and depended on each individual pharmacist’s knowledge and perseverance to wade through voluminous reports on a daily basis.

VigiLanz has enabled us to write logic based rules that can look at trends in labs as well as set threshold values for alerts for all patients and only be alerted for those needing attention i.e. exception based rules. This has allowed us to write rules to monitor for the most common drug-lab problems as well as the more obscure ones as well that might escape a pharmacist’s vigilance.

Also improved by VigiLanz is our adverse drug reaction (ADRs) detection capabilities. Though VigiLanz can greatly improve our ability to prevent ADEs, it can also increase our ability to detect ADRs that occur as well. Writing custom rules to detect the use of ADR tracer drugs taken from Pyxis has enabled us to detect ADRs when using these ADR tracer drugs as a key drug along with a key lab rule to better screen for an ADR.

The advantages of VigiLanz to our clinical pharmacy program have been a measurable increase in productivity based on clinical intervention documentation, more timely responses to therapy interventions, consistency of quality due to evidence-based rules and expansion of pharmacists’ knowledge base, and a greatly expanded number of monitored drugs and labs. All this was accomplished without increasing clinical pharmacists staffing.”
